18th century English fireplace or courting bench/settee. Unusual and rare.

68”W x 16”D x 51”H (17.5”H to seat)

This style of English curved bench was intended to stop drafts and gather heat from a fireplace. Also called a "courting bench", the narrow seat and straight back kept a couple from getting too comfortable.

Hand crafted of solid walnut and ash about 1750, there are numerous restorations over the centuries.

The old finish has been preserved with clear varnish.

Genuine rose cut and square nail heads are visible on this traditional antique furniture.”
